Dumbarton Castle reviewed: excellent views, children may be convinced it counts as fun

Dumbarton Castle is being tipped as a dramatic day out near Glasgow, with scenery bold enough to bother Edinburgh and Stirling.

Dumbarton Castle arrives with the sort of hill-top confidence normally reserved for places that know they are doing quite well in the views department. Near Glasgow, dramatic, and apparently able to rival Edinburgh and Stirling, it is not exactly hiding its light under a gift-shop tea towel.

The castle is also reportedly set to feature in a new book, which is always a useful boost for any historic site hoping to move from “we should go there sometime” to “fine, pack the sandwiches”.

As a summer outing for children, it has the key ingredients: height, stone, scenery, and the possibility of tiring everyone out without having to enter a soft play arena called something like Pirate Monkeys. That alone deserves civic applause.

There is a particular pleasure in a place that offers epic views while also letting adults pretend the whole trip is educational. The children get a castle; the grown-ups get to stare into the distance and call it culture.

Verdict: well worth a wee trip if you are near Glasgow, need fresh air, and would like your family day out to come with a bit more grandeur than a supermarket café and a packet of wet wipes.
