Member of the flock

The Young One

The Young One lives with one ear in his headphones and one eye on his phone. News reaches him sideways: through clips, messages, creators, group chats, memes, comments and somebody sending him something with “mate, have you seen this?” attached.

He does not follow traditional news and sees no particular reason why he should start. That does not mean he is uninformed. He often knows what people are actually talking about before the rest of the flock has worked out why it matters.

His interests move quickly: music, trainers, creators, places, food, nights out, sport, new drops, viral moments and whatever just landed in the group chat. He can know everything about a cultural moment and almost nothing about the official institution standing behind it.

The Young One matters because attention matters. He notices which stories escape the newsroom and enter ordinary conversation, which things people are sharing because they are funny, outrageous, useful or genuinely important, and which supposedly massive stories nobody his age is talking about at all.

He is confident without pretending to know everything. If he has never heard of somebody, he will say so. If something is everywhere, he assumes there is probably a reason worth understanding. His superpower is simple: he knows what people are actually talking about.
